The U.S. men’s national team star had not started an MLS match since 2003 — he had been playing in the Premier League for Manchester United and Everton. Howard made his presence felt keeping a clean sheet in a 0-0 draw against the Portland Timbers.

Howard, 37, joined the Rapids this offseason after wrapping up his 10th season with Everton. Howard joined the Merseyside club on loan from Manchester United in 2006 and remained with the team until May.

Brad Guzan has replaced Howard as the USMNT’s first-choice keeper, but Howard is still beloved by fans for his acrobatic saves and valiant performances in big tournaments.

Howard had not played in MLS since his days with the New York/New Jersey MetroStars — now the Red Bulls — from 1998 to 2003.
