Mattel Creations, the company behind the iconic Barbie doll, released the Tina Turner doll as part of its signature music series.
Based on Turner’s unforgettable outfit from the “What’s Love Got to Do With It” music video, the Barbie sports her signature spiky hair and is even holding a microphone.
The complete look includes a waist-length denim jacket, black shirt and leather mini-skirt over sheer tights and black pumps.
The iconic outfit is topped with drop-pearl earrings and red lipstick.
Designer Bill Greening admitted to using “a lot of screen grabs to see the hair at all angles” in order to achieve her likeness.
“Lots of teasing and hairspray was involved,” Greening said in a statement when the Tina Turner Barbie was announced.
Due for release on October 13, many fans rushed to buy it only to find it had reportedly sold out within a day.
“Thank God I bought my Tina Turner Barbie last night. 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾 Her Barbies are selling out like her concerts,” wrote one fan on Twitter.
Another added: “That Tina Turner Barbie Doll is sold out everywhere! I’m so glad you got me hip to it@WeOutcheaAgain!!! I got it just in time!”
And a third wrote: “But why is this Tina Turner Barbie sold out already ?!?!?”
Available for $55, the Tina Turner Barbie was also sold out on other shopping sites such as Target.
Mattel explained why it wanted to honor “the undisputed ‘Queen of Rock ’n Roll’.”
“Barbie celebrates the unprecedented music career and journey of Tina Turner,” Mattel wrote on its website.
“She is a Grammy-winning, chart-topping singer, and one of the best-selling recording artists of all time.
“This doll commemorates her smash hit “What’s Love Got to Do With It,” and the design is inspired by the iconic outfit Tina wore in the music video.”
The Barbie doll made its debut for Mattel Inc in 1959 because creator Ruth Handler wanted to show “a little girl could be anything she wanted to be,” according to her autobiography.
Her full name is Barbara Millicent Roberts and one doll is sold every three seconds globally.
She became the first toy ever advertised to children in the U.S.
Turner joins an illustrious list of celebrities whose likeness has been honored with their own Barbie.
Other famous Barbies include Laverne Cox, Jane Goodall, Heidi Klum, Elton John, and Olympic athletes Ibtihaj Muhammad and Gabby Douglas.
After a career spanning six decades, Turner can boast accolades such as being inducted twice into the Rock ‘N’ Roll Hall of Fame, first with Ike Turner in 1991 and again as a solo artist in 2021. She is also a 2005 recipient of a Kennedy Center Honor and a multiple Grammy Award winner.
